Titera’s Tidbit: Dreidel
In Yiddish, a dreidel is something that turns, as the German cognate verb drehen suggests. In particular, the thing that turns is a top with the Hebrew letters nun, gimel, he, and shin on its sides. The letters are an abbreviation for “Nes gadol haya sham”, meaning, “a great miracle happened there”.
