Sip of the Day – Windows 8: “All Apps” Comes of Age

Sip of the DayWindows 8: “All Apps” Comes of Age

Titera’s Tidbit: Texas
The name Texas derives from táyshaʼ, a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai Native Americans, which means “friends” or “allies.” European conquistadors (explorers) first arrived in the region now known as Texas in 1519, finding the region populated by various Native American tribes. During the period from 1519 to 1848, all or parts of Texas were claimed by six countries: France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America—as well as the Confederate States of America in 1861–65.

Titera’s Tidbit: Deep Blue
Deep Blue was a chess-playing computer developed by IBM. On May 11, 1997, the machine won a six-game match by two wins to one with three draws against world champion Garry Kasparov. Kasparov accused IBM of cheating and demanded a rematch, but IBM refused and dismantled Deep Blue. ”Deep Blue” is a play on IBM’s nickname, Big Blue.

Titera’s Tidbit: Satellite
Meaning “planet that revolves about a larger one” first attested 1660s, in reference to the moons of Jupiter, from L. satellites, which was used in this sense 1610s by German astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630). Galileo, who had discovered them, called them Sidera Medicæa in honor of the Medici family. Meaning “man-made machinery orbiting the Earth” first recorded 1936 as theory, 1957 as fact. Meaning “country dependent and subservient to another” is recorded from 1800.

Titera’s Tidbit: Beer Goggles
This jocular term from college slang dates to the early 1980s. To wear “beer goggles” means to see things through an alcohol haze, so something that seemed like a very good idea the night before turns out to be a decidedly bad one in the light of day.

Titera’s Tidbit: 20th Century Fox
Well into the next century, this renowned film studio retains the name it took in 1935 when William Fox’s pioneering Fox Film Corporation merged with a new concern, Twentieth Century Pictures, founded in 1933 by the legendary producer Darryl F. Zanuck and several partners. Fox specialized in building theaters, while Zanuck made films, and admirable arrangement that made the studio on of the most powerful and profitable in film history.

Sip of the Day – Windows 8: Launching Apps, Past and Present

Sip of the DayWindows 8: Launching Apps, Past and Present

Titera’s Tidbit: Coachella
This California desert city was once called Conchilla, meaning “little seashell”, so called because little shells could be found scattered across the landscape, once a seafloor. In 1909, a cartographer working on a survey crew misread the name and entered it on the San Jacinto atlas sheet as “Coachella”. Some residents objected that the name had no meaning, but others considered it “unique, distrinctive, and euphonious”, and it was soon made official.

Titera’s Tidbit: Reindeer
The Scandinavian rein is the plural form for the cervids we call deer, which itself, in Old English, was the generic word for all animals. Thus a “reindeer” is a “deer deer”, strictly speaking.
