Titera’s Tidbit: Sudoku
This popular number game, invented in the United States in 1979, was originally called “Number Place.” Its now-universal name comes from a Japanese version of it that dates to 1984 called suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, which means “a number can occur only one time.” The name was shortened to the acronym “sudoku” soon afterward.
