The Tagalog word nilad refers to a blossoming shrub with white flowers that grows in profusion on the island of Luzon. Maniland means the place where the plant grows, which corresponds to the location of the capital of the Phillippines. Paper was made from the plant, which gives us our term “manila envelope”.
