Manufactured by the Swedish firm SKF, the “Volvo” was originally the trade name for a ball bearing. In Latin, “Volvo” means “I turn, I roll”. In 1924, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson branched off from SKF to manufacture automobiles, the first of which went into production in 1927 with the parent company’s “Volvo” name attached.
