Titera’s Tidbit: Spam
Invented in 1937, this popular foodstuff is a kind of canned meat made mostly of pork shoulder. The name is an abbreviation of “spiced ham”, and, according to its maker, that name preceeded the product. As a trade magazine noted of the coiner, an actor named Kenneth Daigneau, “Seems as if he had considered the word a good memorable trade-name for some time, had only waited for a product to attach it to.”
