England is a cloudy country, and the Old-English speaker who gazed into the sky and saw there was nothing but endless white hills came up with a suitable metaphor. At root, our word “cloud”, a mass in the air, is the same as “clod”, a clump of dirt, and “clot”, a solid object surrounded by liquid.
