Titera’s Tidbit: Elixir
Now meaning a liquid that has magical or curative effects, “elixir” followed a curious route. From the Greek xeros, meaning “dry” (as in xerography and xeriscape gardening), it entered Arabic as al-iksir, “the dry thing”, presumably referring to a powder of some sort. It returned to various European languages sans the dry sense.
