Titera’s Tidbit: Raining Cats and Dogs
The comfortable, cartoon-like image we have of this English phrase is of dogs and cats raining down from the heavens, but the original is much less pleasant. In the seventeenth century, marked by plague and pestilence, a heavy rain would flood the gutters and carry off the always abundant dead cats and dogs that lay there. Such a heavy rain came to be characterized thus, even long after plague ceased to be a problem.
