Titera’s Tidbit: Easel
An “easel” certainly makes life easier for an artist. It affords a sturdy place on which to rest a canvas, but ease has nothing to do with the word’s origin. Instead, “easel” comes from the German esel or Dutch ezel. The English cognate of ezel is “ass” – a beast of burden, which a laden “easel” metaphorically resembles.
