Many of the seventeenth-century Dutch immigrants who settled in what is now eastern New York prospered in the fertile new country, giving rise to some jealousy among their compatriots back home. Netherlanders came to call their American cousins “John Cheese”, that is, Jan Kaes (rhymes with “brawn pays”). The “Yankees”, as they came to be known, seem not to have minded the nickname.
