Titera’s Tidbit: Maraud
In the dialect of southwestern France, a maraud is a tomcat, a creature that comes and goes as it pleases. The word came to be applied to human drifters and vagabonds, presumed to be up to no good as they wandered. It was thus extended to mean “to raid”, “to plunder”, rather than simply be footloose.
