Titera’s Tidbit: Tennis
The game of tennis is thought to have originated in Italy, but it was codified and found its earliest popularity in France. When the ball was served, the player would call tenez, meaning “get this”, from the verb tenir, “to take, to have”. When the sport was introduced to England, the English changed its pronounciation and spelling.
