Titera’s Tidbit: Eke Out
“Eking out” an existence is all work and no fun, as if a living were being pulled out of the jaws of some very mean beast. Its medieval original was more forgiving, for eke out then meant “add to” — to supplement the basic income of, say, farming, by doing handyman work, sewing, or the like. All that, of course, means work, too, but the sense of grimness and scarcity in the phrase as we use it is a more recent addition.
