The pleasant-sounding word “whirligig” has been applied to all kinds of things that spin, from top to helicopter to maple seedpod. In its ealiest appearance in about 1450, whyrlegyge was an approximation of the Latin word giraculam, meaning a thing that turns — which, of course, is just what a “whirligig” is.
