Titera’s Tidbit: Gerrymander
Controlling a voting district by rigging its boundaries to exclude members of the opposition is a dirty but common trick. One of its most adept practitioners was a Massachusetts governor named Elbridge Gerry, who carved out a district that, to one newspaper editor, resembled a salamander in shape. Combining the two words, that editor coined this term in 1812.
