Titera’s Tidbit: Scoundrel
The Latin escondere means “to hide”, as in the California place name Escondido, “the hidden-away place”. In its original sense, the word “scoundrel” referred to someone who hid away his true intentions, sniped from under cover, and otherwise operated out of the sunlight — someone not just evil, in other words, but also sneaky.
