Titera’s Tidbit: Bats in the Belfry
This topmost part of a house or church was once applied to the top part of a castle. In German, a bergfried, was the safest part of the fortress during a siege. It would hardly matter if you had “bats in your belfry”, only that the catapults couldn’t reach it. The term’s sense of “crazy” is an Americanism dating to about 1900. It equates belfry with the head and bats with battiness.
