Titera’s Tidbit: Hideous
The medieval English word hidous meant not ugly, as the modern sense carries, but extremely terrifying. Hidden in the word is another word, hide, as in “pelt”. An extremely terrifying thing in days past might have been shaggy or hairy, like, say, a bear. The word is cognate with the Latin hispidus, “blistling”.
