Titera’s Tidbit: Goody Two Shoes
In 1765, the English writer Oliver Goldsmith published a children’s story called History of Little Goody Two-Shoes. Its title character is desperately poor but so wholesome a benefactor rewards her with new shoes. Unfortunatley, she is rather proud of them, showing off to everyone. “Goody two-shoes” has thus come to mean someone who makes a point of showing off virtue.
