In classical Greek times, a mystery was a secret religious ceremony in which were revealed “things seen and things heard”. So guarded were these events a participant entered the arena with eyes closed, and mysterion means something like “closed-eyes place”. Now a “mystery” has something of the same sense. We contemplate it, but we cannot see the answer clearly.
