The “PalmPilot”, without a space, was introduced to the market in 1996 by Palm Computing, then a division of U.S. Robotics. The idea behind the name was that a guide through daily life could be made to fit into the palm of a hand. The Pilot Pen Corporation soon brought a suit against Palm Computing for trademark infringement, claiming it owned the name Pilot.
