In the 1884 presidential election, Republicans crossed the aisle to side with Democractic supporters of Grover Cleveland because their own candidate, James Blaine, was believed to be a corrupt servant of the railroad barons. The New York Sun called them “mugwumps”, a word that derives from the Algonquian muggumquomp, “war leader”.
