Titera’s Tidbit: Slush Fund
In sailor slang back in the days of the tall masts, slush referred to the murky, fatty leftovers at the bottom of a soup pot, which made for good eating in times of hunger. The ship’s cook would sell off portions of the slush he had hidden away during those lean times, giving rise to our term “slush fund”, meaning a sum of money for which there is generally no accounting.
