Titera’s Tidbit: Buffet
A medieval household of any means contained a sideboard with a top that could be opened to store dishes and linens. This useful piece of furniture took its name from the Old French word bufet, which means “a slap”, because of the slapping sound the top made when it was closed. The meal served atop the sideboard came to be called “buffet” too.
