Titera’s Tidbit: Speculate
An ancient Roman soldier might have been assigned to a specula, “a watchtower”, to keep an eye on things. A Roman woman might have fixed her hair with the aid of a speculum, “a mirror”. Our word “speculate” originally meant “to watch over”, the sense of which transferred to mean something like “theorize”, which event- ually gave rise to the sense of “take a calculated risk, one that you’ve thought through”.
