Titera’s Tidbit: Shrewd
A “shrewd” person, in modern parlance, knows his or her way around a problem and can think things through; the sense combines wisdom with cunning, with a hint of sneakiness. The Middle English original had decidedly negative connotations; a person who was schrewed was twisted, the schrew in question being the origin of both the modern words shrew and screw.
