Titera’s Tidbit: Obiter Dictum
In legalese, obiter dictum means something more than its Latin original, “offhand remark”, might suggest. Such a thing as issued by a judge means an opinion that may have some influence over the jury and lawyers present, an opinion based on experience and wisdom but not thoroughly researched. it is not entered into a judgment, and has no legal force. “I think your ties is outrageously ugly” might be one such opinion.
