Titera’s Tidbit: Don’t Change Horses in the Middle of a Stream
This bit of folk wisdom is usually attributed to Abraham Lincoln, whose presidential rhetoric often had homespun touches. Lincoln used it in his 1864 presidential campaign to argue he should not be turned out of office in the middle of the Civil War, citing “an old Dutch farmer, who remarked to a companion once that it was not best to swap horses when crossing streams.”
