The names of most peoples of the world mean something like “we, the people, as opposed to those other guys, who are the enemy or the strangers”. “Apache” is a case in point. The “Apache” call themselves Deneh or some variant of that word, meaning, of course, “the people”. “Apache” comes from the Zuni phrase for “those whom we fight”.
