This well-worn phrase sounds like something that Benjamin Franklin – an apple grower of much note – might have concocted for his Poor Richard’s Almanac. In fact, it first shows up in English as the translation of a Welsh rhyme. It made its way into the classroom and popular culture in America in about 1880.
