Titera’s Tidbit: Moor
In the first century B.C., Roman soldiers began conquering northwestern Africa. There they met black Africans to whom they game the name Maures, from the Greek mauros, “dark” or “black”. Some later historians mistakenly include the Moors among the Arab peoples, perhaps beause the Moors converted to Islam. In Shakespear’s Othello, first staged November 2, 1604, the title character, a “Moor”, is unmistakably African.
