The deathless bird of Egyptian mythology was on the mind of early Arizona booster Darrell Duppa, who climbed a knoll on a winter’s day in 1868, looked down on the ancient Indian canals below, and said, “Here a new city will spring ‘phoenix-like’ upon the ruins of a former civilization.” His neighbors liked the sound of the name, and instantly adopted it.
