— Carrying a sense that combines great evil and hedonism, as in “wanton cruelty”, the word “wanton” at heart means “without training”, thus “undisciplined”. The unattested Old-English original is thought to have taken a form like wan, “un-“, and welitowen, “well brought up”. Thus someone “wanton” was, originally, more sloppy than bad.
