Titera’s Tidbit: Juggernaut
— In Hindi, jaganntha means “lord of the world”, a name for one of the avatars of Vishnu. Indian festivals honoring the god showcased enormous cars made of wood and metal, under which the most fervent of followers would sometimes throw themselves to prove their devotion. The first Europeans to witness such acts thought the car itself was called a “juggernaut”, now our term for something huge and unstoppable.
