— For the pejorative sense of this word, we must look to the Broadway of the Jazz Age. Critic Walter Winchell wrote in 1927, that “turkey” denoted “a third-rate theatrical production”. How the unfortunate bird came to signify a bad performance is anyone’s guess. Metaphorically, however, as one Broadway critic explained, “a turkey flaps its wings but doesn’t fly”.
