Titera’s Tidbit: Cornflower
The “cornflower”, a type of aster, takes its name not from maize but from the Geek mythological figure Chiron, a centaur–that is, half-man and half-horse–who had great healing powers. In what is called folk etymology, whereby unfamiliar names are changed to familiar ones, chironflower became “cornflower”. Many medicines are made from the “cornflower”, its genus name being Centauria.
