The early Spanish conquerors of southern South America engaged in a little wishful thinking when they named the region’s major waterway Rio de la Plata, or “silver river”. In the early sixteenth century, explorers traveling inland were rewarded by finding silver deposits in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, whereupon the region was given a more elevated Latin name, “Argentina”, meaning “the silvery place”.
