In its original sense, the “orchestra” was not a group of musicians but the place in front of the proscenium of a stage, the place where onlookers at a play might dance; thus the Greek orkheisthai, meaning “to dance” or “to tremble”. Musicians came to occupy this place, and the term was eventually applied to the players and not the place.
