Titera’s Tidbit: Poinsettia
Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851) was an explorer, soldier, linguist, physician, and scientist who became the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico. There, in 1826, Poinsett came upon a brilliant red succulent in full bloom in winter, a sight that amazed him. Local people, he learned, used the plant to treat fever and external wounds. Poinsett gathered specimens and sent them to his South Carolina plantation. By 1829 growers were producing the plant commercially.
