Way back, when a cup of coffee cost a nickel, the person who poured it didn’t have a specialized name; it was the waiter, the counterman or the short-order cook who did the courtesy. Now that a cup of coffee costs more than a gallon of gasoline, a suitably professional term is in order: thus “barista“, borrowed from the Italian word for bartender.
